What is counselling or psychotherapy?

The terms 'counselling' and 'psychotherapy' (or just 'therapy') are often used interchangeably. Both involve talking to someone who is trained to listen. Counselling is a particular kind of conversation, where the person can feel sufficiently safe to openly explore difficulties and painful area of life experience.

The confidential nature of the counselling space is one important aspect of feeling safe.

FAQ #02

What type of counselling is offered?

My 'home base' is an approach called 'Person Centred Counselling', based on the work of Carl Rogers, and emphasising a deeply respectful stance towards the person seeking help, and the belief that they may be helped towards their own solutions.

How do I know if I need counselling?

Only you can decide whether to take this step. Talking confidentially to someone who is not a friend or family member can make all the difference. Counselling provides a regular time for those in distress to explore their feelings and talk about their problems. A counsellor can help you develop better ways of coping, allowing you to move forward with your life.

How long does each counselling session last?

Each session will usually last one hour, but this is flexible and open for discussion.

How regularly will I see or speak to my counsellor?

Weekly sessions are common, however this can vary depending on your requirements.

Can I have my counselling by telephone or by Skype?

Yes, please ask for the arrangement that suits you best.
